Tru-Cape publishes their history of ancient apples as an e-book.

Hot on the heels of the publication of their newest book, the authors of The Newcomers and Their Friends, the book about the current apple varieties and their history, Somerset-West residents Buks Nel and Henk Griessel have released their first book, Apples in the Early Days at The Cape which explores apple varieties 100 years and older, as an e-book available on Kindle at Amazon.

Authors Henk Griessel and Buks Nel both of Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, the largest exporter of South African apples and pears, ask does one start with the first Cape apple, the Wyn apple, that Jan van Riebeeck planted and which bore fruit in 1662, or the first Grabouw apple, Rhode Island Greening planted by Dr Viljoen in 1899? “Or, do we go back further to a famous English physicist Sir Isaac Newton, who sat under an apple tree (the Newton Apple) in about 1680 and had his revelation on gravity? Or, do we talk about local apples like the Tjeek apple that a certain Mr Strydom first demanded the cheque (Tjeek) before he supplied the apples? Every apple in this book has had a place in history in South Africa and the world. One has to read the book to appreciate the interesting story of each variety,” they say.
