Eselfontein 2021 raises R121, 000 for local charities.

The annual Tru-Cape Eselfontein Festival which comprises a three-stage mountain bike race and various trail runs, is a major fund-raising event for the local Ceres community.

Janene Malherbe of Eselfontein, a Tru-Cape apple, pear and now cherry grower that also has a dairy and stone-fruit in the Ceres valley, is the organiser of the race. “It was a good event this year although very small with 164 participants whereas in the past we have had twice as many people. This year, 114 people competed in the three-day mountain bike race and trail run. It was nice to have something going as so many other events were cancelled this year. We raised R121, 000 which is not bad,” Malherbe says modestly.

“We also had glamping tents available for the first time and people really enjoyed that. We hope that with the Cape Epic Race, which was just after our festival, that next year we will have an even stronger event and additional sponsors to raise even more money for local schools and homes for the aged in our community,” she ends.

The individual winner of the event was James Gerber in a time of 6:44.11.0 and the winning team, in a time of 7:06:49 were Gianpaolo Carlone and Andrew Reaper of the Forza Racing Team.
