First look at the tree that launched SA’s apple industry on April 17, 1662.
There was a strong North Westerly wind on April 17, 1662 as the first apple was picked on South African soil at The Company’s garden. Today, to mark the birth of the apple industry in South Africa, Tru-Cape is pleased to share the first photograph of the Witte Wijn Appel, the same variety that was picked all those years ago. This tree, imported from Holland and currently in plant quarantine, will be replanted in Tru-Cape’s Heritage Orchard and also hopefully in The Company’s Garden on April 17 next year.
