New Grabouw venue for the popular Tru-Cape Packhouse Challenge in 2018.

The ninth Tru-Cape Packhouse Challenge has a new location. This year’s event, to be held on Saturday, August 25 from 07h30, will be at De Rust School, Grabouw and not at the Grabouw Country Club.

According to organiser, Petra van Rensburg of the Elgin Grabouw Athletics Club, the new route includes the stunning Paul Cluver Estate and will feature orchards, vineyards and river front.

The event, open to people working in the apple and pear processing industries of the Western Cape, as well as the general public is a calendar highlight and a race where all levels of staff work together to score the highest number of points for their packhouse.

“There are three races”, Van Rensburg explains: “21.1km, 10km and 5km and some people do them all consecutively. The packhouse with the most combined kilometres wins the hotly contested Tru-Cape Packhouse Challenge trophy currently held by Two-a-Day. 

Tinneke van Zyl, who works in Quality Assurance and New Cultivars at Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, the largest exporter of South African apples and pears into more than 104 countries and one of the competing companies in the race, says that the minimum age for the 10km trail run is down from 15 years old to 12 years old so feel free to bring along those younger athletes.
