R200, 000 raised for Grabouw sporting codes that help keep young people out of trouble.

On a sunny Saturday in March, three sporting codes – rugby, cricket and golf teamed together to collectively raise funds with a golf day.

For Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, the largest exporter of South African apples and pears, this event was especially important. “We are frequently approached to sponsor events”, says Tru-Cape’s Marketing Director, Conrad Fick, “And even those that qualify as they are within our grower community, and have a healthy-lifestyle focus, are dependent on an ever-shrinking sponsorship budget. Tru-Cape set the challenge to the various sporting codes that approach us for sponsorship support to combine their efforts and to partner to raise funds collectively.”

Dimitri Jacobs is Director: Human Resources at Two-a-Day, a major employer in Grabouw and one of Tru-Cape’s parent shareholders. He was also one of the co-ordinators of the Elgin Grabouw Classic Golf Day. “Tru-Cape was the first company to commit their support for the event which helped the organisers secure the support of other businesses in and around Grabouw. There are not many activities in Grabouw that keep the youth stimulated and sports therefore plays an integral role in keeping our youth away from trouble. Many of the beneficiaries are employees of companies that pack fruit for Tru-Cape which make the contribution even more worthwhile. The event was highly successful with all three major sporting codes in Grabouw benefitting from about R200 000 profit. Last year we managed to generate about R100 000 and this year we were able to double the profit from the event.” Jacobs ends.
