Two recent Tru-Cape-sponsored events helped raise R160 000 for Grabouw schools. Saturday, May 7 was a busy day in the Grabouw Valley with two healthy-lifestyle events sponsored by South Africa’s largest marketer of apples and pears that also coincided with the end of a successful apple harvest.

The Tru-Cape MTB at the Elgin Grabouw Country Club has long been a calendar favourite and this year although drawing slightly fewer entrants, largely as a result of inclement weather, still helped raise R60, 000 for Grabouw High School. Event coordinator and head of Grabouw High School Finance  department, Alma Rossouw, says that despite a chilly and wet start the event itself was very well oiled and organised and people had a good time. “We had lots of new stuff this year, the the family entertainment area for one and the stunning new route master as another and the Country Club handled the deliciously lekker food takeaways really well. We especially liked the new Tru-Cape textile bunting which was stunningly effective and brightened up the whole venue in a very colourful and professional way.”

Tru-Cape also sponsored the first Applewood Trail Run which was part of the Applewood Harvest Festival, a fundraiser for the Applewood primary school in Grabouw. “We are still celebrating the success of a really fabulous event. We enjoyed a most successful day during which we raised just under R105 000”, says event co-ordinator and Applewood parent Catherine Boome adding, “the money will go towards the building of a new school swimming pool. More importantly though we enjoyed a day of wonderful community support and were able to showcase Elgin Valley produce and crafts to a wide audience. The success of the day would not have been possible without the positive support of Tru-Cape for which the school community is most grateful.”

Conrad Fick, Tru-Cape’s Marketing Director, says that both events met Tru-Cape’s criteria of being in an apple and pear growing region, celebrating a healthy lifestyle and involving Tru-Cape’s growers. “Next year we hope to dedicate a weekend to these events so that MTB enthusiasts who are also trail runners can participate in both. Tru-Cape is responsible for the livelihoods of over 15 200 people, many from the Elgin, Grabouw and Villiersdorp Valleys, so we hope to be able to dedicate the first weekend in May next year to a celebration of physical fitness, awareness of our natural environment and a festive end of the harvest in true Tru-Cape style,” Fick ends.
