Apples and Pears in crate

Keeping fruit in the fridge makes it last longer

Do you know that every apple and pear you eat is a living thing? Keeping fruit in the fridge and away from bananas and other ethylene-gas producing fruit will keep them freshest for longest.

Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, the largest marketers of South African apples and pears, says that the recent higher than normal temperatures will impact the fruit in size and shape. “While Tru-Cape continues to only pack to a high standard we want our customers to be more understanding when it comes to cosmetic appeal of fruit,” managing director Roelf Pienaar asks.

When fruit isn’t sufficiently attractive to eat fresh, there are many things to do with it: making sauces and compotes is the easiest and also an excellent way to preserve fruit. Apple and pear chutney is not only delicious to eat but also a brilliant gift and Xmas stocking filler as it only improves with age.

Adding a dash of acid like a splash of vinegar or a squeeze of lemon to cut fruit will help slow oxidisation – a perfectly natural and good-for-you browning of cut fruit.

Apple pies only taste better when you use a variety of apples along with Granny Smith.  If you have a slab of puff pastry in the freezer and a nub of butter and sugar at hand, a classic Tarte Tatin can be made from even the least beautiful looking apples or pears.

Tru-Cape has many free great recipes on their www.Tru-Cape.com site and in their recipe book, Too Good To Be True, which is available to purchase on their site. Also see www.Facebook.com/TruCape
