Local school benefits from Tru-Cape-sponsored golf day.
The Kingsway Christian School held a fundraising golf day at the Grabouw Short Golf Course which Tru-Cape supported.
The Kingsway Christian School held a fundraising golf day on Saturday, February 6 at the Grabouw Short Golf Course. The faith-based school is for learners from early childhood development ages to Grade 12. According to principal Kobus van Vuuren they are a small independent WCED-subsidised school situated in Grabouw. “Our school was registered with the WCED on 3 June 1996 and we are celebrating 20 years of Christian Education, currently with 62 students of which 60% come from the less privileged community. We want to stay accessible for children from all racial and economic backgrounds and thus keep our school’s fees as low as possible so raised funds are essentially important to us,” he says. There were 11 four-ball teams who played on the day.
Daneel Oosthuizen of the Grabouw Short Golf Course explained that in 2004 a group negotiated with the Grabouw High School to turn their unused and neglected land into the town’s first golf course, a nine-hole short one of just over 2000 meters rather than the typical 7000 meter course that takes far longer to play.” As a community course there are no membership restrictions and, especially because of the link with the school, they are actively encouraging school-goers to take up the sport which, if successful, can be one of the most lucrative career paths. 
Oosthuizen asked fellow Grabouw High School alumnus and active Grabouwer Conrad Fick, marketing director of Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing that sells the fruit from Grabouw’s Two-a-Day and others, for help. “Tru-Cape was one of our initial sponsors and they still support our annual golf day and other charity drives such as the Kingsway event,” Oosthuizen says.
Commenting on the sponsorship, Fick says that Tru-Cape’s brand positioning as a Takeaway from Nature, and healthy energy boost, fits well with sports events which is why Tru-Cape sponsors a number of Grabouw, Villiersdorp, Ceres and Langkloof events in areas where their apple and pear growers are based.
