Many in the Helderberg areas covering Somerset West, Sir Lowry Village and beyond in Grabouw started the new year with a pit in their stomachs out of concern for the impact of the raging fires in the Helderberg region, many of which remain active as at 5pm on January 4.
Tru-Cape’s Marketing Assistant Chris Kolbe explains: “Nine people from the office went to two different drop off points to help make sandwiches to support the fire fighters as well as assisted with the off loading of items coming in and to help packing parcels going out. We were there for about three hours.”
Kolbe says that the support from the community as a whole has been amazing. “People drove through with vehicle loads from Cape Town. The Neighbourhood Watch wives have been working at the various drop-off points all through the night and have not seen their husbands and families since yesterday. The guys from the Neighbourhood Watch are transporting to the Firefighters and assisting where they can. The amount of donations has been so much that they have asked people not to drop off any more food as they now have too much. When we arrived at the NG Kerk this morning they said they had food for 700 people already.”

Tru-Cape donated 10 cartons of apples. “As soon as as our fruit arrived it was loaded onto vehicles and sent up the mountain for the fire crews as the fruit was still chilled and the firefighters wanted something cool and fresh. They have had enough peanut butter sandwiches for now,” he ended.
Tru-Cape is proud to be based in an area with such a strong community support spirit and so grateful to the men and women who are fighting the fires.
